How Do We Make Our Silk Rugs?

It takes many months to make a carpet. It requires millions of silkworm cocoons to make just one carpet! After the silk is gathered into threads, natural dyes are applied to spools of silk thread.
Next, the laborious process of weaving each thread and creating knots. After a row of knots is created, the extra thread is cut away. Finally, each rug is washed by brushing with water and carpet shampoo. After it is cleaned, it is ready to be exhibited for sales. The photos below demonstrate the process.

Each knot is made one at a time…
First a loom is set up.
The weft pushes tight each line of knots to make it secure.
Rows of knots are sheared to give the carpets their smooth surface. Finally, the carpets are washed.
